Throw Ups The history of the "throw-up" started with writers in the 70's doing quick "bubble-letter" pieces to "get-up" fast. The first writer and crew to take this form of "bombing" to a new level was, IN-1 & THE TOP CREW. Their goal was to take over the whole subway system. They accomplished this by inventing the two-letter throw-up which helped them become "All-city" kings in the mid 1970's. Many writers used this concept and took it to a new level. Originality is also very important and writers could be criticized for having a "whack" "throwie"

COPE 2 Speaks ... |
I am a Puerto Rican and graffiti comes from the Ghetto, the streets and poor kids. White rich kids from the suburbs were never writing graffiti. This comes from the dirty ghetto were your parents were on welfare... That's were it started. you started by putting your name on walls, cutting school, getting your boys together to go steel markers and go write on trains. In the ghetto you mainly seen blacks and latinos. Not that there were no white kids writing, but the white kids I knew were not writing. Then I learned how a lot of pioneers where white, Like TRACY 168, MARK 198 & BOOTS 119. A lot of old school writers were white. in the ghetto there were poor white people as well. I am not saying that all white people are rich. But the strong majority back in the days were blacks and latinos. |
SEEN, QUIK, COPE 2 In the mid 1980's QUIK - KD and COPE 2 started a very effective partnership on the IRT's. COPE has written with many writers over the years.. CONE, SPEL, REX 167, TRAP, PONT, DELTA 2, JOEY-TDS, POVE, CAP, JON 1, HEK-TAD, ROOK, MED-UA, 3-CEE, ROB-UA, PJAY and many others. |
CP aka COPE 2 In the late 80's Cope and Pjay would move on to the BMT's. The two would leave no room for there competitors. |
I remember the MTA was doing a heavy cleaning on the on the " D - line in 1984. It seem like nothing
could run on that line. I remember hearing on the writers Bench on 149th street, that Cope 2 and Cone had set fire to the buffers in the " D "-yard. An hour later I took off to scope out the D's and all you would see was.... COPE, CONE, COPE, CONE.. none stop done the line. they took over that line as easy as that. |
