1)
Where did you start writing and who were the first writers you saw
on the Subways that inspired you to write?
____________________________________________________________________________________ |
|
I
STARTED WRITING IN 1976.WHEN I
WAS IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL I HAD A TEACHER THAT TALKED ABOUT GRAFFITI AND
GRAFFITI WRITER NAME TAKI 183. HE SHOWED THE CLASS THE BOOK FAITH
OF GRAFFITI, WHICH HAD TO BE THE FIRST BOOK TO TALK ABOUT GRAFFITI
WRITING. HE WAS PASSING
|
|
THE
BOOK AROUND THE CLASS AND I SAW THESE UNIQUE NAMES INSIDE AND ALSO ON THE
FRONT COVER. I WAS HOOKED VERY DAY. THE FIRST TIME I WENT OUT AND
TRIED TO READ THE NAMES ON THE
SUBWAYS
WAS NOT EASY, BUT AS TIME WENT ON I BEGAN TO UNDERSTAND MANY OF THE STYLES
|
|
WRITERS
WERE USING. THE LINES I WATCHED EARLY ON WERE THE I.N.D'S. THE
GUYS I CAN REMEMBER KILLING THAT LINE WERE WRITERS LIKE ... UNCLE JOHN 178
& TEAR 2, JESTER 1 ( A/K/A DY167
), DEAN ( A/K/A
LE A/K/A
KO. ) OO.ONE, TRUE 2, IN (A/K/A
KILL 3 A/K/A
BI ), MOVIN 2 ( A/K/A
TI 149 ) IZ THE WIZ, ROTO (
A/K/A
EL 5 ), SNAK, PI 2 ( A/K/A FANE 2. ), KEVIN 97 ( A/K/A EX-1 ). I ALSO
WATCHED THE EARLY 7 -LINE WRITERS LIKE ... ROGER , DOC 1, FLICK 1 - " THIS
GUY HAD GREAT STYLE IN HIS DAY " ) CHINO 174, CANE 3, SON.ONE (
A/K/A
THC1 A/K/A
BP.9 ), FO 1, PRO 1, BIC 2, NET 1, WAVE 2, EL 1 - THE ORIGINAL ), EAST 1 (
A/K/A
JY ), SKY 2 ( A/K/A
LO).... I CAN GO ON AND ON.
|
|
2)
How did you come up with the name TON were you aware of TON 5 that wrote
with TRACY 168 on the I.R.T's or did you
have any beef with him?
_____________________________________________________________________________
|
|
BELIEVE IT THE NAME CAME UP IN
SCHOOL. WHEN MY FRIEND VINNIE AKA FRAME3 SAID YOU SHOULD WRITE TON-1. I WAS NOT
AWARE OF TON5 UNTIL I CAME ON SUBWAY OUTLAW HALL OF FAME A COUPLE OF MONTH AGO. THERE WAS NO BEEF.
HE'S TON 5 AND I'M TON.ONE. BUT PROPS TO THE ORIGINAL
|
|
3) Who were the first writers you met
and can you remember your first experience hitting the Subways , where and who
were you with?
______________________________________________________________________________
|
|
THE FIRST WRITER WAS FRAME 3 IN NEWTOWN HIGH SCHOOL LITTLE THAT I KNEW JOEY TPA
AKA RC AND FLAME 3 AKA FLAME-PIC WENT TO THE SAME SCHOOL AS ME. BUT FLAME 3 DID
NOT WRITE THEN
UNTIL LITTLE LATER. WE WERE IN THE SAME CLASS. BUT MY FIRST EXPERIENCE HITTING THE
SUBWAY WAS WITH MY COUSIN
|
|
HE
WAS WRITING THE TAG NAME SOAP WE WENT TO THE 7 LINE LAYUP AT WILLARD POINT OVER THE BRIDGE. BUT WE GOT CAHT FOR SNEAKING OUT
AT 3.AM IN THE MORING BY OUR PARENTS. HE DECIDED TO QUIT AFTER HIS PUNISHMENT. I
KEPT WRITING.
|
|
4)
What Subway lines did you hit more
when you started and who were some of the writers that were tiring the
line up at the time?
________________________________________________________
|
|
IN
THE BEGINNING I FOCUSED MORE OF MY ATTENTION ON THE I.N.D LINES MAINLY, E's, F's, GG's
AND THE N's . IT WAS KEVIN97 AKA EX-1 THAT WAS TEARING UP
THE LINE AT THAT TIME. HE WAS ON EVERY CAR. JESTER 1 DY 167 WAS KILLING THOSE
LINES HARD BACK THEM AS WELL AS IZ THE WIZ AND A FEW OF HIS BOYS.
|
|
5) Would you have any racking
adventures you could share with us and could you tell us some of the writers
you were with?
________________________________________________________
|
|
RACKING STORIES? I AND THE PEOPLE I WENT WITH
WERE PRETTY WELL SKILLED RACKERS. WOW THE ONLY CRAZY STORY I HAVE HAPPENED
WITH ME FUZZ ONE, BAN2 AND I THINK A FEW OTHER WRITERS WERE WITH US IN
A WOOLWORTH OUT IN RIDGEWOOD QUEENS. A FEW OF US WERE ON OUR WAY OUT THE
DOOR AND ONE OF THE WRITERS I WAS WITH HAD CANS OF PAINT IN HIS SOCKS THAT SHIT MOVED AROUND AND
THE STORE MANAGER HEAD IT AND YELLED, HEY! A FEW OF US RAN AND THE MANAGER
GRABBED THE GUY WE WERE WITH AND SLAPPED HIM AROUND. NOT SAYING ANY NAMES BUT THAT'S WAS SOME FUNNY SHIT. |
|
6)
Can you tell us all the writing groups you were in, as well as who
were the leaders of those groups and
how did you get in?
|
|
WELL AT FIRST I STARTED BOMBING WITH OUT PUTTING ANY CREWS. THE FIRST CREW WAS
TPA / CITY / TC. I THINK IT WAS ONE MORE. THE LEADER OF TPA WAS VADE - JOEY TPA- DEMO. CITY CREW'S LEADER WAS CEY. THE CREW ( T.C ) WAS JESTER GROUP. VADE
PUT ME DOWN WITH TPA AND CEY PUT ME DOWN WITH CITY. AND THIS WAS COOL COMING
FROM THE LAY UPS ON THE Es Fs DIRTY
|
|
AS SHIT ME AND VADE GET ON THE TRAIN AND
THIS TALL GUY WITH GLASSES SAID TO US WHAT DO YOU WRITE I SAID TON ONE & OY
AND THIS IS VADE . AND HE SAID HE SEEN OUR NAMES UP. WE ASK WHAT DO YOU WRITE HE
SAID JESTER THE CREW I SAID OH SHIT AND THAT'S HOW ME AND VADE GOT DOWN WITH
THE CREW. AND HE SAID HE LIVES IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD ALL THIS TIME DAM. HE ALREADY
HAD QUIT WRITING WHEN WE MEET HIM THAT WAS AROUND 1978-79.
|
|
7) The insides of the Subway are very
over looked as well. Do you remember your approach to bombing them? Who were
some of the writers you think had a very nice flair
while hitting the insides and what writers do feel had the best had writing
styles?
|
|
HELL YEA!
I BOMBED THE INSIDE EVERY CHANCE I GOT I HAD A MINI AND PILOT MARKER
ALONG THE WAY. I ALSO USED SPRAY CANS IN THE INSIDE AS WELL I EVEN DID THROW UPS
IN THE INSIDES. THE KEYS
ME AND A COUPLE OF THE TPA CREW USE TO MAKE OUR OWN KEYS FROM SKELETON KEYS
JUST FILE IT DOWN. BELIEVE IT OR NOT THOSE KEYS WORKED. THE WRITERS I FEEL WHO
HAD NICE FLAIR BY FAR MY
MAN VADE TPA WITH THE FAT UNI-WIDE TAGS AND WAS KING OF THE INSIDES OF THE
E'S, F'S, GG'S & N'S FOR A FEW YEARS. VADE FAVORITE SPOT WAS THE PANELS JUST
BELOW THE ADVERTISEMENT POSTERS, BACK IN THE DAY WE CALLED IT THE HEAD LINE
SPOTS. HIS YOUNGER BROTHER WISE3 HAD A NICE STYLE HE HAD A CRAZY S IN HIS
TAS. AS FAR AS WRITING STYLES JESTER , ROTO, DEAN, FUZZONE &
FLAME3, BAN 2,, CEY CITY, SCOP, EKO, SIR, CER
,JOEY TPA & DEMO TPA , EX~1, PRO & SON.ONE ON THE 7 LINE ROGER SO MANY MORE IT WOULD TAKE ME
MONTHS TO NAME EVERY BODY.
|
|
|
|
8
)What are all the Subway lines you
have hit over years and can you tell us all the Yards and lay ups you've
been to?
________________________________________________________
|
|
WELL I'VE HIT THE 7's, E's & Fs GG's, N's, RR's, J's, LL's, D's, B's,
M's 2's 1's. BUT MY MAIN LINE WAS THE Es & Fs. MY
FAVORITE LAY UPS WAS AT SUPTHIN BLVD LAY UP , 75TH AVENUE LAY UP, 169TH STREET
LAY UP AND VAN WYCK LAY UP. THE YARD I HIT WAS AT NEW LOTS FOR 2's AND 3's AND
FOR THE J's AT SUPTHIN ELEVATED
LAY-UPS AT THAT TIME. OH YEA, I BOMBED THE 7-YARD A COUPLE OF TIMES AND
HIT THE 7- LAY
UPS AT WILLET POINT AND MAIN STREET OVER THE BRIDGE, JUST WHEN IT WENT INTO
THE TUNNEL.
|
|
9 ) What are other names that you wrote over the
years?
_____________________________________________________
|
|
I
wrote two other names, one being OYE or OY for short. I used them mainly
for throw up's. I also wrote SPORT 1, SUPER SPORT, SPORTY SPORT. I did
allot of nice SPORT pieces which I'd like to get my hands on some photos
of them. Many of us back in those days would use another name, for
example guys in TPA had a few, VADE wrote ORBIT and PHEW, DEMO wrote
M-3 which he use to kill the buses in Jamaica with. JOEY wrote RC, CEY did
allot of NOTCH and WELSH pieces, FLAME had names like DEVINE and
DREAM. FUZZONE had about a thousand it was hard to keep track what he was
writing one day to the next.
|
|
10
) In
the 1980's the art Gallery's began to open their doors to Subway writers
to display their work. Did you ever get involved in the Gallery scene. If
so could you tell us a little about it?
________________________________________________________________________
|
|
I never
got involved with the Gallery scene, But VADE and I were the first
two Queens writers to stumble across what was happing at the time. We were
both in the west village and seen that ZEPHYR, CRASH, FUTURA and a few
other were displaying their painting at art show or gallery. The place was
full of people and the two of us were just bugged out on how much attention
these writers were getting. Once we got home to
|
|
Queens
we both went looking for CEY. During the time CEY was getting real good with the art he was
putting up on the Subways and was becoming one of the best members in the crew.
Make a long story short CEY got over there and the rest is history.
11) The I.N.D lines are very over looked. Who were some of the biggest names
you remember bombing the line?
|
|
THE E's, F's, N's, GG's WERE OVER LOOKED AND THAT'S A SHAME. ALLOT OF GOOD STUFF WAS ON
THOSE LINES. IN MY ERA THE TOP WRITERS KILLING THE I.N.D'S WERE KEVIN97
A/K/A EX~1, FANE 2 A/K/A PI 2, IZ THE WIZ,
VINNY, JESTER 1 A/K/A DY 167, UNCLE JOHN
178, TEAR 2, ROTO, SNAK AND THEN CAME QUIK,
TOR, UN 1, NASTY NA, DEAL PLUS MANY MORE .
I WOULD CATCH ALLOT OF MY I.N.D TRAINS AT THE E & F YARD AND 175TH STREET
LAY UP. I WOULD HIT THE B.M.T'S IN JAMAICA WHICH WERE THE J LAY UP'S.
|
|
12
)
Would you have any raid or chase stories you could share with us, Where was it
and did you get caught?
________________________________________________________
|
|
I,VE NEVER BEEN RAIDED BUT HAVE BEEN
CHASED TWICE. ONE TIME WITH VADE, SPLIT CITY, I WAS AT SUPTIN BLVD LAY UP AND
SPLIT AND I WAS DOING THROW UPS ON THE SAME CAR AND VADE WAS TWO CARS DOWN
FROM US. YOU STILL CAN SEE THE STATION SO I TOOK A LOOK AT THE STATION AND
THERE WERE TWO GUYS COMING DOWN THE LADDER AT THE END OF
|
|
|
THE PLATFORM THEY DIDN'T EVEN LOOK TO SEE IF ANY BODY SAW THEM
COMING DOWN THE LADDER SO I SAID TO SPLIT, " YO TWO GUYS ARE COMING DOWN THE LADDER AND HEADED OUR WAY." SPLIT SAID THEY MIGHT BE
WRITERS? " I SAID BULLSHIT I'M OUT OF HERE ". I CRAWLED UNDER THE TRAIN SPLIT WAS RIGHT
BEHIND ME BUT VADE WAS STILL THERE IT WAS DARK NO TIME TO WARN HIM. SO SPLIT AND I CAME OUT A VAN WYCK STATION DIRTY AS SHIT AND WENT BACK TO
SUPTIN BLVD WHILE WE WAS THERE WE BUMPED INTO A FEW OTHER WRITERS. THEY WERE NEW
JACKS TAGING
UP ON AND PLAYING THE BOOM BOX RADIO LOAD. SO SPLIT AND I WAS STANDING THERE I
LOOK OVER AT THIS GUY COMING OUT THE TURN STILE WHITE GUY SLIM GRAY HAIR
AVERAGE LOOKING GUY WALK BY... " ALL OF A SUDDEN THIS GUY SAID FREEZE"! I HAD A BRAND
NEW UNI-WIDE AND THOSE NEW JACKS JUST TAGGED ON THE WALL. THERE WAS A TOKEN
|
BOOTH THERE THE COP WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE SO I DITCH THE UNI-WIDE AND
HEADED FOR THE STAIRS SPLIT AND I THE COP SAID IF YOU GO UP THE STAIRS JOE IS GOING
TO GET YOU I SAID FUCK YOU AND JOE SURE ENOUGH JOE WAS UP THE FUCKING STEPS
DAM PUT ME AND SPLIT.CITY IN CUFF,S.BUT CHECK THIS OUT THEY LET SPLIT GO AND
KEPT MY ASS AND THE NEW JACKS.TOOK ME AND THE NEW JACKS TO ROOSEVELT STATION
THEY HAD NOTHING ON ME THEY TOOK MY NAME AND LET ME GO .THEY KEPT THE NEW
JACKS BECAUSE THEY HAD UNI-WIDE AND MINI PAINT.EVEN VADE GOT AWAY DAM I WENT
BACK TO CHECK ON HIM. THAT,S SOME FUNNY SHIT.OH HAVE,NT SEEN SPLIT.CITY SINCE.
I WONDER.
13
) What writers from your era in your
opinion do you feel are very over looked in History?
|
|
THERE ARE SO MANY WRITERS THAT DON'T GET THEIR PROPS. BUT TWO THAT COME TO
MIND ARE SON AND PRO. AFTER GUYS LIKE ROGER , CHINO 174,
TRACY 168, VINNY, CA, JESTER ,
P-NUT 2, CLIFF AND VAMM HAD QUIT . SON.ONE
AND PRO.ONE TORE THAT NUMBER 7 LINE UP . I HAD A CLASS MATE WHO LIVED ON SON.ONE
BLOCK . VADE AND I WORKED TOGETHER SO AFTER WORK WE
